Beats me. Some girls do it for a few months only, others for 5-6 years (like Aimi and Asahi), while other are still going strong after 10+ years. But 2018 is just brutal, it really feels like an entire generation of JAV stars retiring.

I’m also looking for any print interviews folks are aware of – even if they’re in Japanese, I can plug them into Google Translate and get a vague idea of what is being said.

Despite her having a perfect body and being an adequate actress, I’ve never been into Mikako Abe videos. She never quite sells the fantasy to me. But in that interview, I found her amazingly attractive.

I’ve seen that mentioned in English forums, but nothing in more reliable Japanese sources. The one video she posted on Youtube merely announces she’s retiring and tells the story of her career in AV as a long song, but I didn’t see anything actually indicating she wants to be a youtuber.
Takeuchi Ai’s thing looks more like a takedown request past the 5-year period. If it were a mosaic issue, it wouldn’t affect only her works across all studios, it’d affect many studios/actresses (all those using the services of the same “ethics association”) at once for a given period.
PS: how come Momonogi is missing in that image for Ideapocket’s 20th anniversary!? Could this be foretelling her retirement? It makes 0 sense to put Masuzaka Mia there and not Momonogi, who is the 3rd most senior actress in their current roster after Kizaki and Tsubasa.

It’s a law from 1907 which forbids distributing “indecent” materials. Their interpretation of it is that adding a digital mosaic over dicks doesn’t make it obscene anymore (?). We can laugh about that interpretation, but that’s the deal.

Another thing I observed is that some actresses find solace that their vaginas won’t be shown explicitly, and that the penis that’s going in them will never be shown either, and I kind of get it. It can be easier to work when you know for a fact that little Billy down the street won’t be able to see your tongue work on the tip of the dick you’re sucking, just the vague idea that you are indeed sucking some dick. As for Koharu, I agree what you’re saying. In one of her early posts she spoke about how introverted she was even in her high school years. She probably entered into AV without understanding the full consequences of it. Her bad choices (sudden hiatuses, retirement, escorting and quitting) are clearly a result of emotional instablility and her low self-esteem. IMO what she needs isn’t so much a break, but support and probably therapy for her depression.
I’ve got a general JAV question: what isn’t controlled by DMM/Hokuto? I’m just starting to get an idea of how much they do control. Best I can figure, SOD is the only big studio that isn’t controlled by DMM. But I guess SOD still sells on the DMM website. But Knight Video seems to blacklisted from DMM and all the normal JAV sites. In short, I’m confused. Is there a reasonably simple explanation of what DMM/Hokuto doesn’t control, and how they affect the general shape of the market?
There’s a lot of small studios. And big ones like Crystal Eizou, Alice Japan, etc. Not sure about prestige, maybe too?. But yeah, I get your point. Hokuto saw the money in distribution, and so they are everywhere now which it’s a bit obnoxious when you really think about it.
SOD at some point became the biggest in Japan and I think we have the JAV flavor right now thanks to them and their more creative and edgy videos back then, and they pushed for less pixelated videos too.
Knights Visual originally was listed on DMM, but over time they didn’t want to pay more fees to DMM so they searched another distributor.
