Wow, what a story, you’ve lived! To me Ai no Corrida (silly English marketing title In the Realm of the Senses) is the highest level of honesty in art. Since it is based on a real story and it is based on a woman’s obsession with her lover’s penis, you can’t make it with simulated sex, the film simply won’t work. Unlike many movies where I hear the same and I watch and I can see exploitative tendencies at work.
I think Ai no Corrida won’t feature here because it is technically not pornography. None of the scenes are “intended” to cause arousal (they still succeed in doing that depending on the viewer) and the actors do not do anything for effect. But it is J and it is for adults and hence it is technically JAV. So, maybe…what do I know?
The “JAV” films that come close to the “effect” of Ai No Korrida are the FA-Pro labels (FAX, HTMS, HQIS, SQIS etc.) many of them directed by Henry Tsukimoto (spelling?). They all use a handful of male actors and a slightly larger cast of females (who are usually no the drop dead glam variety). The atmosphere and acting are top notch and almost seem like they don’t care for the viewer at all, such is their dedication to the script. If I am not mistaken, they are all from the 2008-2015 era. Only a decade ago, but feels like much more compared to today’s output.
But they do have some quirky aspects – like a ridiculous striptease/dance they perform at the end of each film, sort of like end credits but sans the text.
And the reference to Gian Carlo Calza’s Poem of the Pillow was interesting. Made me picture Italians responding to Japanese sexuality. Just like my old girlfriend when she watched In the Realm of the Senses /L’Empire des sens / 愛のコリーダ, Ai no Korīda.
