I was a computer programmer for a big part of my career, but I won’t take offense. Never dealt with fishy possibilities myself.
However, I don’t think the root cause is with computers (or those behind them). Unlike Chinese which have a well-defined Romanization system (pinyin and before that Wade-Giles) that avoided ambiguities, Japanese is quite loose and allows for variances. This could be (not sure, just speculating) why so many names have multiple versions (I am not talking about completely different names that the performers take over their careers).
