If you rely on subtitles for that, as opposed to just getting a rough idea of what a story is about, you won’t be able to judge the original material. Most translations are abyssal: missing lines, sometimes perplexingly wrong translations that convey the exact opposite of the original, at times entirely made up stuff (some call it “reinterpretation”). Subtitling takes a LOT of effort and frankly it’s wasted on people who watch for free and are unable to judge the quality of the end result anyway.

If you look for and find a translation of the original manga it’s much more likely you’ll get something of at least passable quality. It’s easier to work with written material to begin with, and it’s often commissioned or done by students or real fans, if not official, not by people with little interest, meager motivation and skill.
