From watching English TV, I’d learned that the people who made their livings scavenging trash in the days of wood burning chimneys, soot, chimney sweeps, etc., were called “dust men.” Had more dignity than modern slang like “dumpster divers.” But seeing how “protagonist” (anti-hero?) here who could stop time with a whistle was doing his rounds – got curious – googled trying to find a word for such a type of person in Nippongo/Nihongo.

The good thing about Spain is that taking someone else’s home is legal. They call it “ocupacion.” This greatly reduces the rate of homelessness.
But then the one whose home was taken becomes homeless? Is this a sinister musical chairs game where everybody is steal each other’s home? And they’re not reflected in the stats because they steal somebody else’s shortly?

Akira Kurosawa released Dodes’ka-den in 1970 about a group of people who are social outcasts. They lived in a landfill – the way so many homeless people make do in a range of settings now all over the world. People in Japan were outraged, upset that this would be the view of life in Japan, when in actuality there was no issue with people being unhoused in Japan at that time.
He is better than us. He is better educated. He is smarter. He is more eloquent. He has traveled more, seen more places, met more cultures. He knows Japan and its society better than any of us.
