I get the feeling her popularity peaked a while ago, shortly after her move from S1 to Prestige, and around the time she was nominated for the DMM awards (IIRC that showed in the DVD sales ranking).
Nowadays it’d seem Prestige’s strongest name is Kawai Asuna… but at the end of the day, the real workhorse is Suzumura Airi. Even back in the day when Ayami Shunka was the studio’s flagship (and most senior actress ever, overtaking Asuka Kirara), Suzumura consistently outsold her. It’s only because of her (near pathological) shyness that she’s never been the flag bearer. Sales-wise, she’s been the most consistent performer at Prestige for a while, and if memory serves she’s the most senior active Prestige actress.
Harusaki Ryo is starting to get a good foothold as Prestige’s main gal. Suzumura has seemed to slow down.
Not sure if she’ll be a main gal, but I do love Oto Sakino.

Yeah, that ending was almost as abrubt as her retirement. They should’ve included an ending where Mion thanks her fans and stuff for all the support. As for the cause between those health reasons I see a lot of speculations, but we have to remember that being an AV actress is a demanding job both physically and mentally. And I respect Mion for saying that if she can’t do it with 100% full dedication than its better to quit (and in that regard its the opposite what Aimi Yoshikawa did, who kept filming despite being under tremendous stress and you can seen who much she didn’t care in her last films).
