The brother is dead, or is thought to be. This is why the father slams shut the family altar when he and his ghostlike son enter the room early on (2:20).

The altar contains the young man’s picture in the place where a deceased relative would be memorialized, though we don’t see this until the epilogue, in a brief shot that’s presented as an outtake (2:11:10). His apparent death explains the ending, following the movie’s hottest sex scene, where it turns out Mana was fucking … no one (1:53:04).

Despite humorous touches (like Mana’s butt-scratching, game-addicted idler), this is a dark story of a family racked by grief, denial, and incestuous desire—ending with the star’s porn anniversary party and a cheerful POV hand job. Which is why we love JAV.

So far, the directing and the sound design make a ton of sense when watched as a ghost story. I’m guessing the ghost is so passive because it is mostly a projection of the family’s unrealised needs, and because it makes him unsettling.
