Accordingly some horses – when they are seen to idle in front or lose focus at a fence for example- are tried with some form of headgear to stop the problem as it is considered by jockey / trainer that they are being distracted by other things happening around them. Just like humans some horses find it easy to maintain concentration and focus some do not A slap down the neck is used for the same reason; you often see a jockey give a horse a flick with a whip on it’s front quarters after a mistake at a fence or if wandering; again it is an attempt to restore lost concentration. On a technical point, blinkers (or winkers) were first used by carriage drivers at least since the 18th Century – it was thought that horses, with their 360 field of vision, would be frightened by the movement of the wheels behind them when pulling (more accurately pushing!) a carriage, and therefore needed to have their rearward vision limited in order to avoid constant bolting and the deaths of many landed gentry! I have driven horses in open bridles (ie without blinkers) and they are perfectly fine! The use of headgear on racehorses is almost always a question of trainer preference and/or myth/superstition! Hoods can be a comfort in cold weather. Andrew Balding runs all his horses in sheepskin nosebands, for no particular reason other than possibly comfort for the horse (sheepskin nosebands are another “aid” that is thought to limit or stop fractious head-tossing, but I don’t believe that either!) In other words, as far as making betting decisions is concerned, “first time headgear” (of whatever sort) doesn’t really interest me. A bone of contention I have is allowing them to run without declared equipment.
So Horse A is declared to wear a tongue tie. You do your
due dilligence and the
trainer has a decent record, the horse has been travelling well in its races but not finishing off well.
You expect improvement for the
tt and get on about half an hour before the race.
Next thing they cant get the tongue tie on but decide to
run Horse A anyway.
The only reason you had a bet was because the tt was declared
and you expected improvement and now the selection runs without the tt.
How is that fair to the punter, its not?

I can fully appreciate that a trainer might remove headgear so it under performs and it’s rating drops, but it’s in these instances that i think the punishment from the stewards is inconsistent and flawed.
I’ve often seen a step up in trip ( for example ) given as the major reason for the improvement in a horse when it wins and the trainer or a representative is asked for an explanation from the stewards. However, what shouldn’t happen then is for the horse to be dropped back to the distance it was running prior to that victory.
It calls into question the whole process of a stewards review.
It’s one thing for us punters to read between the lines but there needs to be transparency with the authorities
