it’s called time dilation and it works like this. light travels at the same speed in vacuum regardless of your reference frame and all inertial reference frames obey the same laws of physics, there is no preferred reference frame. this creates an apparent contradiction because if I aim a laser pointer at the ceiling of an airplane from my seat then I see it traveling in a straight line to the ceiling at the speed of light but someone standing on the ground and looking into the moving airplane will see the light moving diagonally forward since the airplane is moving forward and the spot straight up for the laser will have moved a few mm forward by the time the laser gets there from their perspective. the apparent contradiction is that if the laser travels diagonally at the same speed it can’t go at the same rate as if it just traveled the same vertical distance without having to move any horizontal distance. unless somehow it had more time when it had to go diagonally, which is exactly what happens; the observer on the ground sees the laser moving slower through time since the laser is on a moving… Read more »
